This video explains the true Biblical meaning and purpose for the gift of tongues. Comparative to modern "tongues" the Bible simply does not teach what we see happening today.

  • continued...So, we have different gifts, and are different parts serving different needs according to our gifts. Around 4:30 of this video it says tongues refers to known languages...Yet, Paul in I Cor 13.1 talks of speaking in tongues of angels and 14.2 talks of tongues speaking to God and not men & uttering mysteries with his spirit. So, as ICor12 & 13 teach - we're one body, different parts. If we can't love each other as Christians...how can we be witnesses of Christ's love to the world?

  • @OdenRaig in 1 Cor 13:1 Paul said IF he spoke in the tongue of angels, there is no evidence that he ever did such a thing. It was simply an example of an extreme. In 1 Cor 13:2 he said IF he moved mountains, which there is also no evidence he ever did. 1 Cor 13:3 says IF he surrendered his body to the flames. It is clear these are all examples of things that IF he did them they would be meaningless without love, not a list of things that were actually done.

When Paul talked about speaking to God not men and uttering mysteries, he did so in the context of an example of what we should NOT be doing. That is why he later said "So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. 13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says."1 Cor 14:12 There is no suggestion that this tongue can not be interpreted or is not a human language.

  • The Bible teaches there are different gifts and people have different gifts (i Cor 12.1-11). One of these gifts is tongues. Not everyone has that gift and to those who don't or who are taught they aren't for today, they don't understand them and try and denounce them. The other sad part is when those who have the gift can't understand why others don't and there becomes this unproductive back and forth infighting to their validity.

Don't you know, we're one body in Christ? (I Cor 12.12-30)

  • @OdenRaig 1 Cor 12:1 "Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant" It is not due to our lack of understanding that we say the gift of tongues have ceased, it is due to our understanding of what it's purpose was for that we say it. We are one body in Christ and it is out of love, not simply a need to argue, that we share the truth about this gift. If we must worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth then the truth is important.

  • it is amazing at how many people exnore certain parts of the bible and pick and choose what they want. well. have you not read mark 16:17 also in another place paul talks about the spirt speaking directly to God. Because words wearnt enought. Sometime the soul needs to talk directly TO ITS CREATOR. GOD ALMIGHT!!!

  • @1991shea Mark 16:17 "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues" This says nothing about speaking directly to God or WHO they are speaking to. The tongues were new to the speaker, not the to world. In Acts the new tongues they spoke were real human languages. In fact it tells us exactly which ones. Acts 2:8 "Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites..."

  • If no one is there to interpet the speaking, then what could Gods purpose be? It would have no purpose.

  • praying in tongues is different from speaking in tongues and intepertion of tongues cause those 2 are gifts. Mark 16:17 Those that believe in him shall speak new languages.. which comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit

  • Great explanation of the true meaning of speaking in tongues. May God bless you.

  • you would never know if all tongues are associated with real languages unless you did a complete evaluation. i have personally been in at least 3 services while there was tongues and interpretations you cannot tell me that has no value to believers. if you have ever experienced the gift of tongues you would know how great you feel.

  • @a68rebel Thank you!!! You hit the nail on the head. Tongues was done at Pentecost because there weren't enough people or any people to speak some of the languages that showed up at the sermon. So God gave the gift of tongues to the apostles. The apostles were speaking in their own familiar tongue (probably Hebrew/Aramaic), but those who needed it heard it in their language, and nothing was heavenly/unknown about it.
