On behalf of The Maya Conservancy, Mission Izapa 2010 was an unprecedented event of inter-cultural and timely importance. Participants facilitated the way for 13 Guatemalan Maya spiritual elders to re-ignite and re-connect to the spiritual energies in ritual fire ceremony at the ancient site of Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico. This is the site connected to the Maya's creation story, the Popol Vuh, and the initiation of their 260-day sacred and Long Count calendars. No one has performed sacred ritual here for more than 1,000 years. The ballcourt is aligned with the winter solstice on December 21, 2012. The mayor of Tapachula welcomed our group as "distinguished visitors". Here independent Maya researcher John Major Jenkins speaks at the press conference, June 24, 2010.
