Jean Ziegler, former UN Special Rapporteur, speaks at the Graduate Institute, Geneva. "Food Crisis, Challenges and Prospects". Extracts of his intervention.
Mr. Ziegler: Starvation is not a result of capital market. It's a result of a situation which could be understood by using primary school arithmetics. A country that produces not enough food for its people will suffer starvation. The most obvious solution to this problem is family planning. Speculations can only be successful in case of shortage. Shortage is a result of an imbalance between supply and demand. Less births and the problem is solved. But maybe you're a deluded christian.
I'm afraid not, Ziegler! Unfortunately, most of the sane people think that you're an utter prat! Ask them who they'd prefer to meet: UN special rapporteur Jean Ziegler or the man who cleans out the public toilets in Aberdeen, and they'd go for Wee Jock "Poo-Pong" McPlop, every time.
