I know Six Flags replaced the cable 2-3 years ago. The ride was shut down for about a month at the beginning of that season. I vaguely remember riding it atthe fair, but have ridden it several times a year at Six Flags. It's probably the safest design with very deep channels for the cables on the cars.
Great video, The multi colored, box like street lights that were found all over the fair still are used today and can be found at the Orange County fair in Middletown NY.

The cable cars were not flimsy in 1965. They probably are more flimsy now because they are made more cheaply to make more profit.
