Based upon the real-life sinking of the SS Politician, off the Isle of Eriskay during the second World War, it is a hilarious drink-filled romp through the culture of the Western Isles. The dour and staid Captain Waggett is outwitted at every stage by the quick-witted islanders of Todday, who will try everything to get their hands on the precious cargo of uisge-beatha...'the water of life'... as rare as gold-dust during the wartime rationing. Except of course on the Sabbath, when all attempts to retrieve the whisky are postponed by the spiritual needs of the people.

  • Alexander McKendrick was perhaps about as pure a director as film ever turned out. He made every film absolutely for himself, the devil take the hindmost. As for the pair chasing the others in the truck, the one with the mustache you will recognize as one of the cricketeers from Lady Vanishes, the other was a very fine addition to The Man in the White Suit. Ahh the Brits and comedy, alas nothing like any of this now. Pure travesty anymore.

  • @doctornoooo Ahh the man in the white suit. I saw this as a kid and what a wonderful film it was. I found a youtuber whos got this and am downloading it as I type this, Thanks for the brain tweak on a classic I'd nearly fogotten about. :)

  • this ending is one of the best from Ealing: for about a decade they just could

do no wrong with their comedies: easily, no make that far and away the best

burst of comedies in the history of conema. Quite an amazing standard: and

just watch the guy hand the other one his fingernail clippers as a pair of

wire cutters, very quietly of course. It doesn't get any better.

  • @doctornoooo Thanks for comment. Yep the nail clippers are rather ironic.

  • the guy in whisky I mentioned who's also in white suit: look for him as one of the

men who suffer under one one of the explosions in the factory: just as in this movie

this guy is truly funny: he was not in much even with Ealing but he never overplays

or underplays: he's just damned damned funny.

  • the last eight minutes or so of this film is as tight as comedy ever got: matched only by the Ladykillers Dr Strangelove The Bank Dick and a very few others. That is has

so few viewers yet here is something of a surprise. Some of the film lags, but when it is good it is much much much better than good. Perhaps I will go back and alert

the viewers at the first to Gods ake give it a roll of the dice. It will come up seven more than enough to keep them in the game.
