pH 13.5 Sludge loaded with toxic heavy metals rushing through Devecser.
Bleach's pH is 13. Since pH is a logarithmic scale the .5 unit difference means that the sludge is 3.16 times more alkaline than bleach.
According to Greenpeace the sludge contained at least 50 TONS!!!!!! arsenic among other toxic metals such as antimony, nickel, and cadmium. Arsenic is a notoriously poisonous metalloid, historically it has been widely used as pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides. Long term exposure to arsenic has been linked to bladder and kidney cancer in addition to cancer of the liver, prostate, skin, lungs and nasal cavity.
Nine days after the spill, there is still no official report about the composition of the sludge. Analyzing it shouldn't take this long. What does the Hungarian government try to conceal?
