SelectPlusShelters Filling Up As Foreclosures RiseShelters Filling Up As Foreclosures RiseThe Associated PressThe tough economic times hitting the nations are having an effect on pets and pet shelters. (Aug. 6)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:various inside shelter]A new victim of the high rate of foreclosures is emerging -- pets.At the Newark, New Jersey animal shelter, the cages are filling fastSOT: Denton Infield, Humane Society of Newark: "people losing their homes to foreclosures. People moving out of high rental apartments into lower rental apartments where the landlords don't allow animals." [Notes:pets in shelter] And all those new residents mean trouble for the future of the shelter.SOT: Infield: "if the animals keep coming in in the situation that they are coming in at the present moment, without finances, I don't think we'll last the next three years." [Notes:great danes in yard]And it's not just shelters...the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League tells the same story.SOT: Mary Francini, Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League: "this year we're seeing a lot of financial difficulty and foreclosure -- people giving up dogs that have always been well cared for, but they can't afford them anymore." [Notes:various of animals in cages] The Humane Society in Newark says there's a 20 percent increase in pets getting dropped off and that could mean there won't be enough room for all the cats and dogs.SOT: Infield: "we try our best to find them homes, but if we get over-crowded unfortunately the ones that have been here the longest will be put to sleep." [Notes:Great Danes in yard]And it's not just the small pets, other Humane Societies across the country are seeing horses and other pets turned in due to financial hardships. ___ ___, The Associated Press

Great Dane rescue makes it really hard for people to adopt. Some say it's easier to adopt a child.

No excuse. Homeless people can own dogs, homeowners are just being selfish.

I don't know why this is any big surprise, after all this is a society that abandons its elderly to deplorable conditions in nursing homes. Self serving greed and decaying morals are killing this country.

the White House is big enough to accommodate all the pets who are at risk of becoming homeless and euthanized because of over-crowding shelter's etc. Perhap's the first lady Michelle could also make her rounds around the country and teach those American families who have lost their home's & give them tip's on how to redecorate their one room in tent cities' and grow their own vegetables. This is what they got for voting for the "Man of Change that They Could Believe In" Barack Obama!

perhaps due to the cost of feeding all the newbies. who knows? Call your local shelter and find out how you can help.

why would a shelter filling up cause it to close?

Pretty soon people will be eating the dogs and cats like they do in China or make toys and coats out of them. People really do not care about animals.

I'm not surprised this is happening. So sad, and I'm sure the animals are wondering why.....
