Second Antarctic swim. Deception Island is the rim of an old volcano. The blast blew off the top of the mountain and left a deep basin of 160m, which has since filled with sea water. The most recent volcanic eruptions were 1967, 1969 & 1970. A narrow gap exists in the mountain called Neptunes Bellows which allows access into the island by boat. The remains of Chilian & British scientific bases are to be seen along with an old Norweigian Whaling station which were destroyed by the volcanic mud flow. I was accompanied by Cape Petrels, Blue Eyed Shags, Chin Strapped Penguins and an Elephant Seal during the swim. The water temperature was minus 1 degrees celcius, the air temperature was minus 20 degrees celcius in a 15 knot easterly wind. I climbed to the top of Neptunes Window a narrow break in the wall of the volcano prior to swimming to get the circulation going. Fantastic swim...really enjoyed it!
