This song always breaks my heart. It remind me of both sets of my grandparents. Only one remains, my grandpap, my father's dad. I can never hear this song without crying, because it speaks to a love that many will never have, including me. Why can't we go back to simple times, when love was true, and people stayed married until they died. God, Grant me this wish...let me find the love of my life, so I can spend as many years with him as possible.

I remember when this song first broke on the radio. The girl that was on that morning, gave it a nice intro and said she had not yet heard it, but after all, she said, it is Kathy Mattea, so it has to be good. . .and then the song started. I sat listening, with tears in my eyes. When it was over. . .there was silence, then a commercial came on. . .and then another. When the girl came back on, it was obvious she had been too emotional to say anything. A beautiful song.

My Mom and Dad passed 6 months apart and I moved in to help them along in that last year. Several times......they were in the same hospital.....on different floors. When I hear that line in this song.....I break down....every time.......

Kathy's version is great - I first heard Don Henry do this at the Philly fest years ago. He was a great songwriter and performer - but I haven't seen nor heard from him in years. Anyone know if he's still around? Despite this heart-tugging song - he could write some funny songs too. The entire festival grounds left that year singing a song about a kid named Harley that year.

I used to hear this song when I was little and didn't understand the true meaning of it till I saw her perform live. My father's parents were exactly like this and went through the same situation. In the end Grampa died before Gramma but she didn't last long after he was gone.... I get to cherish their memories and feel them close to me every time I hear this song!

Kathy Mattea is great!

I love this song. I heard it on the radio a long time ago and couldn't find it anywhere for years. It got stuck in my head for some reason, and I was thrilled when I found it.
