In 1998, in the Kingdom of Tonga, two Royal Kava ceremonies took place which were presided over by His Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. Never before were cameras permitted at these ancient, traditional ceremonies ~ I directed this program in collaboration with Dr. Eric Shumway and Dr. Vernice Wineera from the Pacific Institute of BYU-Hawaii. Enjoy witnessing a remarkable Polynesian event filled with symbolism and majesty from a bygone era.

  • Thanks for posting. Big ups to the royal kava ceremony lesson. As an American-Tongan there are things your Tongan parents don't teach you. You have to learn it from YouTube.

  • after watching this video, my roots are stronger and i have a deeper understanding into what its like to be tongan, the kava truelly is a constitution of Tonga that binds the people, the land, the King together.... alot of our modern Tongans today need to understand our way and not be too quick to judge our way of life... ofa atu

  • Ifeel PROUD TO BE TONGAN....

  • Malo e fakahikihiki Fonua.

  • I love the videos you post. Is it possible that you post the old PCC show, "Mana"??? Malo he ma'u faiva ke mau ako ai...

  • Thankyou for posting. So proud to see my uncle Fakauho here on 01:11 and again @ 26:40 performing the kava. I only got photo's from the ceremony but now I have this clip.. Fantastic footage........... God and Tonga are my inheritance!!! Love it!!!

  • Love It..

  • I love watching this because it reminds me of the ceremony that symbolized devotion to God and country. The social drinking of kava with its adverse effects on a persons devotion to family and people should be discouraged greatly. But then again this is one mans opinion. "Koe Otua mo Tonga ko hoku Tofi'a"
