Whitney has to be the very best improvisional vocalist in popular music ever. When singing live, she always sings in the moment and just doesn't seem to possess any fear in 'playing' with the melodies and it always works.

Even though her voice seemed more limited in 1997 as oppose to 1986 but it is like when she felt like being a BEAST vocally it was on. She knew every vocal trick in the book is was ready to bring it when she felt like it.
