In the early 1960s, the Australian soprano Joan Sutherland emerged as an opera star of the first magnitude, setting new standards of vocal excellence in the bel canto repertoire that have yet to be matched. Fortunately, Miss Sutherland's American career included numerous television appearances. Here Dame Joan sings Salut A La France! by Donizetti from La Fille Du Régiment.

  • This particular vocal role suited Sutherland very well and she always sounded youthful in it. It WOULD be really interesting to know where this is from and when. I saw her in both the series at the Met in '72 & '73 and I thought she sounded very youthful in those productions and looking carefully, I think this appears as though this could be Sutherland in the 70s. Whatever, she sounds wonderful in this role; wish there were more videos of her performing Marie. Yes, a very favourite album.

  • @dendodd2 I am so jealous! I only saw Joan once - her last concert in Melbourne. I so wish I had seen her in her prime - and at the Met. Amazing & happy memories!

  • 2:35-40 Perfect diction on a High C!

  • Stunning voice, amazing beauty, great setting, what more can we ask of Dame Joan? I <3 this. The color of the aria is matched by the costumes and set and of course the GREAT voice.

  • @CaptFitzbattleaxe One of my favourite albums - of all time!

  • @Espritsdelair That would explain the outfit from the 1969 French arias album. Heh.

  • @CaptFitzbattleaxe There was something recorded in late 1964 - but there are no details. I agree - the voice sounds young.

  • @Espritsdelair There are other references too - Norma is definitely 1970.

  • @CaptFitzbattleaxe Joan's autobiography states the "Mira, o Norma" clip was recorded in 1970 - have a look at p.454

  • @Espritsdelair Actually I can't help but wonder if it's 1966, considering her hair style & the opening title in this posting of the clip: watch?v=Oml-epNNbK0

All consistent with her appearance in '66 with Marilyn Horne (watch?v=GrY66tzzveY).
