@SpyWhoLovedHimself See, the fact that you could never be bothered to go back speaks it all. A proper Sensei and Karate dojo would keep you wanting to come back. I broke my toe in class about three weeks ago and I was back in class the following week! I had major back surgery a number of years ago that kept me away from formal training for YEARS and I still practiced on my own and am back to formal training. Find a better school and try again, never give up.

@SpyWhoLovedHimself Definitely sounds like your teacher was a fraud. It's easy to teach a class that way even if you suck. I had a similar experience with a so-called traditional Shaolin Kung Fu school and all we did was forms and "dead" drills. When I started training in the Wing Chun school I'm still involved with, we got into the full contact and alive stuff right away. That's the only way you'll learn to fight. Fighting must be alive and trained that way if it's going to work.

@hulkout666 well I was one belt from the blackbelt and had my grading coming, but I hurt my leg and I could never be bothered to go back. We were taught to punch from the hip the entire time. We never really did sparring, ESPECIALLY not contact. I think I did sparring once in my entire time there, the other times we just paired up and practiced our blocks etc whilst the partner would throw a punch from the hip at us.

@SpyWhoLovedHimself I don't know who your teacher was, but if he gave you a blackbelt and you were still taught to punch from the hip, he must be a fraud. That's just a training drill to teach attributes. In real sparring and kumite, the hands are up like in kickboxing. It's much more alive. If you think it's shitty and ineffective even after reaching black belt level, you must have gone to a shitty school. Most styles look similar when sparring. It's the small differences that define the style.

I just realized that I work near the highschool they are training in.....lol small world

@SpyWhoLovedHimself It depends on how hard you train and how good your teachers are. Lyoto (Ray) Machida is a world-class MMA fighter and he's primarily using Shotokan. The Japanese police use it, too. Almost every martial arts style works for what it's meant to do, but that doesn't mean that everyone who uses the style is doing it right. There are excellent Shotokan fighters, and there are also worthless ones, and everything in between.

I know this is a strange question, but, what music is playing in this video? I'd like to download some nice Asian instrumental music, and liked this music very much.

That's because either your teacher was a fraud it you didnt understand the techniques. Some schools feel bad failing students during the promotions

I was a blackbelt in Shotokan, I think it's shitty and ineffective. The punching technique of keeping one on the hip for me seems stupid. Boxing and kickboxing are the best for standing strikes in my opinion... And there are some others like Muay Thai but I never tried that out. I heard traditional karate has a kickboxing stance.
The color of your belt does not matter. You are on the way that´s the most important thing!
