The House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band playing in the Grade One competition at the European Pipe Band Championships held in the Stormont Estate, Belfast on 30 July 2011.

The band is playing under Pipe Major Gavin Walker and its medley comprises Gus McAskill, McGuire's Jig, Inspector Donald Campbell of Ness, Home to the Kyles, The Fiddler's Joy, Kirstie MacCallman's Favourie Trad Retro Reel, and The Black Sheep.

It is less than a year since Gavin Walker took over as Pipe Major and it must be a daunting task remodelling the sound specification of the pipe section. This still seems to be work in progress and I am sure the band will not be satisfied with the poor start to this medley. Things improve very quickly, however, and this is a lovely collection of tunes.

A major benefit to the band has been the loyalty and support of its percussion section, every part of which has world class expertise and leadership. How fitting, then, that the percussion section should take the European Grade One Championship with this performance.

  • Not quite sure what to say about this performance. I think 2-3 years time piping wise they may climb back up there. Improvement over the last 4-5 odd years when they were surving purley on there name. Back to the drawing board but thats not a bad thing. Drumming wise,,,tenors way over the top and a look at me thing going on here. Keep going pipee...u will get there..

  • possibly the worst blown E i have heard in a long time. haha, what a shambles. Good result for the drum corps though.

  • Hi What fantastic video quality, has to be some of the nicest video I have ever watched for a long time. Could you please let me know what type of camera you are using and of any additional microphones. And of course thank you for producing such a beautiful compilation of videos of the fantastic sound of the pipes and drums. Keep up the good work.
