It's great that you guys are getting into white water canoeing; its obvious that you have no idea what you're doing, but that's alright. It's still fun. However, I hope you don't do it when the water is running higher. Man-made dams are far more dangerous than natural rapids. They have a tendency to pin people down and drown them. Or take chunks off of people's hands. :)

A buddy of mine and I tried this with inflatable rafts we bought from a toy store at the reservoir by Lakeside park where Kuykendahl Road is now. Disastrous outcomes - he was sucked under, had a chunk of his hand taken off, and we had to walk two miles to someone's house for help. It was totally awesome.

Bear Branch Reservoir... nice, and you are right in saying it is pretty much the coolest thing to do in the woodlands... don't go swimming in that water or you will get leeches all over your legs and arms and in your hair... just don't.
