The Cumberland Trio - I Wish I Were A Babe

From their live renunion concert of Sept 24, 2004, Back Where We Began, The Cumberland Trio performs their signature "gentle protest" song from the folk era of the early '60s about man's inhumanity to man, I Wish I Were A Babe. The lyrics to this great anthem are just incredible, the song having been written in early 1964 by Trio member Jerre Haskew's wife, Barbara Short Haskew, while rocking her then 3 month old baby daughter and watching with sorrow and disbelief the television coverage of the terrible Civil Rights strife occurring in Birmingham, AL, where African-American Churches were being burned and countless batterings of innocent black people in the streets by Birmingham police were occuring. This is a POWERFUL yet beautiful song, with the Trio's brilliant tenor, Tom Kilpatrick, singing the solo verses. This seminal folk group from the '60s folk boom era has reunited with a vengeance in their '60s and are even better than they were back in those days of the folk era- and THAT is saying a LOT!
