WARNING: This film may be upsetting to some viewers. Short film about the beheadings in Iraq. I suppose I should offer some explanation of the symbolism present in this film. The title means "Auction Block." The slaughterhouse depicted lies outside Paris, and was once a church. Now it is an auction block for the sale of meat. The workers killing cows do so as a job, impassionate, so that consumers can have their Big Macs. Everyone wants to eat the meat, no one wants to see where it comes from. The killing is, essentially, for greed. To make money from the sale of meat and veal. The killing of hostages by terrorists, while portrayed as "righteous" (or in other words, in its own false church) by and from the terrorist perspective, is actually motivated by greed and power. The parallel films shown side by side are displayed in this manner because they are analogous. Human life is put up for sale for individual benefit no different than cattle for veal. The doll, as a tired cliché, represents our desensitization. Our desire to play-act suffering and violence. The videotape of a videotape of the slaughterhouse footage reinforces our desire for a removed vantage point of reality. The subtitles that translate the French narration are mostly unreadable. We don't really want to know what's going on. Society, and the individuals that constitute it, thrive on suffering for their own amusement and personal gain. Step out of your glass house before you start throwing stones.
