Ive never seen projector thats cowed up. I would imagine it would be film running though along with rank lines. I was told when I training at UCI that the blade creates the illusion like strobe effect. Next time you see helicopter flying over head or have fan! Place your hand in front of your eyes space your fingers apart and wave your hand up and down.

When I was first introduced to the Maltese Cross 20 years ago, I thought it was something to with Humphrey Bogart. I was misinformed by the chief projectionist who gave 15 or minute lecture on its workings.
