  • Thank you

  • The piece is primarily in 4/4 + 5/4 - there's a few short sections where it goes to 3, primarily for transitional purposes, but the bulk of the piece is in 4+5. The majority of the chart itself alternates between bars of 4/4 and 5/4. The trumpet solo in the middle has a very brief section in 4, but that's about the only time you see anything in 4 that's extended. The ending (the last 28 or so bars) is all in 5.

  • Nice, one of my fav Don Ellis comps......

  • I LOVE THE ENDING!!! when ever i get my bari out i always play the end :D

  • We played this in high school jazz...very difficult. As someone said, it is mostly in 9/4 though I seem to recall the chart was written with alternating measures of 4/4 and 5/4 which made it that much more confusing. Don Ellis was a freakin' genius.

  • @Flextones

13/4 or 5/4,5/4,3/4 or 13/4 if you're looking at the sheet music

  • Great to hear. Now I'm going to have to upload my old video of our championship marching band playing this on the field in 1978! Great memories.

  • Such a killer tune! I love the Live at the Fillmore album!

  • My middle school jazz band played this... easily the toughest chart I've ever played on trombone. I got the solo and it was interesting to play around with different aspects of soloing, such as soloing in 5/4 time and playing with the chord changes

  • This settles in 5 on the guitar solo. 3+2.
