Because anti-commercialism is FORBIDDEN. 'Advertising: Your lying, you're never gonna give me what I want; Smooth talking, brainwashing - never gonna give me what I need'.
The road to happiness has had the signs torn down and rewritten. 'Stuff' substitutes for fulfilment, and every human instinct has been subverted to feed the consumer society.
This song is a rare warning to society; it laments the subversion of truth and reality and the search for happiness for commercial gain by advertising.
