Catalina was neglected and possibly abused as a child. You can hear it in one of her rants. She states that Carl is "slow like a spoiled brat who sits around eating chocolates while his father feeds his daughter nothing but stale bread." Possibly alluding to some issues with her father favoring her brother over her, manifesting in her hatred and mistrust of men.
