Fabian Forte was and is a master of rock and roll with attitude. Whatever he may have lacked in vocal range, he more than made up for in swagger. A monster classic if there ever was one.
@Muirmaiden -- From the 90s to the present there are many recording artists who can't sing yet still sell millions of recordings. They're called RAPPERS. That's a fad that has long outlasted it's 15 minutes.
@squirell1952 -- Actually I can name a pre-Beatle singer whose music has survived; Frankie Valli. He and the 4 Seasons had continued success thruout the British Invasion era and beyond. Recently the musical JERSEY BOYS about Valli and his group has been a great success.
@WytZox1 What is interesting is Fabian threatened to sue the filmmakers when this movie came out, and he claimed they settled out of court, where he and his wife received apologies and a 7.5% ownership of the film. What I'm not sure about is why he threatened to sue? And, you are right about the klutzy busboy. That wasn't true in the film - Frankie Avalon recommended Fabian to his manager and that's how Fabian was discovered.
Fabian has the distinction of being the very first manufactured pop star/teen idol. Since then, manufacturing fake stars for the sake of making money from the tween and teen age demographic has become a finely tuned science. The only difference between then and now is that back then it was good enough to find a cute guy or girl, now it's way beyond cute and into sexy and sexual exploitation. Why else would pics of Justin Bieber shirtless and in tight, wet undies be all over the net?
@enaid324 -- However the "Idolmaker" was a fictionalized story about 2 young singers who resembled Frankie Avalon and Fabian just as Johnny Fontaine in THE GODFATHER wasn't really about Frank Sinatra. No racehorse was ever decapitated to further Sinatra's career in real life and Fabian was NOT discovered as a klutzy busboy.
I met him when I was about 13 - in a motel swimming pool - he was very sweet and signed an autograph for me....he was a cutie....

@MsCOLOnative -- Also in the movie IDOLMAKER the 2 young singers were residents of NYC; Fabian and Frankie Avalon were both from Philadelphia.
