As Latter-day Saints, we believe temples to be unlike any other buildings. They are literally houses of the Lord, holy places of worship where individuals make sacred covenants with God.
Throughout history, the Lord has commanded His people to build temples. Accordingly, the Church builds temples all over the world to make temple blessings more available for a greater number of Heavenly Father's children. The first such temple to be build in the latter days was in Kirtland, Ohio. This video depicts the times and efforts to get that temple built.
