Simple, cheap home-made multiband antenna and transmission line for QRP radio. Demonstrated on-the-air using Hendricks Portable Field Radio 3A. The little 50 ft doublet is made out of two 75 foot long pc of 20 ga. wire, no soldering, held up by a PVC tube.

Home brew parallel wire feeder was easy and fast to make. I stretched the two wires out holding hands at arms length then putting small pc of tape to hold them together. Then, repeated putting a pc of tape in-between each, and resulted in a tape every 2'-6". I folded a little tab at each pc of tape to make it easy to un-tape.

I can just un-tape the feeder in 2.5 foot increments if I want to increase the length of the doublet. Or add pc of tape to hold the doublet together at a shorter length if needed for restricted space. Seems good application as adaptable portable antenna. Very simple.

Antenna is now shown on http://ng9d.blogspot.com/ .

It was fun to sit on deck underneath it with 5 W. Worked MD and DC on 40 and 30m. The internal ATU tuned it on all bands - 40, 30 and 20m.

It did work well on 40m at reduced length. That is about 75% of full 1/2 wave dipole. Next I will try it on 80m, it would be 37% of a 1/2 wave -- a 1/5 wave doublet -- using IC703 and MFJ tuner.

Even though I didn't have a reference antenna, at least it seemed there was no real attenuation even with about 30 feet of excess feed line strung around the deck. Signals were good on all bands, 40, 30 and 20m.

The light-weight parallel wire transmission line provides flexibility in the placement of the operating position.

  • Nice demo of your twisted pair feedline & your PFR-3 Lynn! Curious why the video's audio has so much popping noise on it? Almost like a loose audio connection or ? But as usual great video and production (what's K9DOG name?) ...Thanks, 73- Peanut & Rooster

  • Sorry about sound quality. Since the PFR3A has no speaker, I press one of the ear buds against the camera mic. The pops are probably due to ear bud clicking on the camera. Last night I watched your EXCELLENT video of 2010 SOTA. Anyone interested in ham radio should definitely view that one!!

Don't let the "old goat" over-work you guys, but definitely keep those cool videos coming! K9 is "Leo". You can get a better look at him in my latest "camping" video ;-) 73 Steve de Lynn/NG9D . .

  • How is the recv audio on 20 and 30? Mine is way low and with headphones, AF Gain all the way up...may use a head phone amp

  • That looks like the wire sold for Invisible dog fences in large home improvement stores. About $25 for 500'. I need to pick some up.
