Karla Jo Helms on Crisis Management

In crisis management not only do you have to mitigate the damage, but you have to turn the company inside out kind of, to really get them to start publicizing their good works. A lot of companies do a lot of great things, but they dont always think to publicize it, you know, like a bank for instance, paves a county road so that their clients, their customers can get to the bank easier. Well, it not only helps the county, because the county didnt have to pay for it, but it helps all the customers that come in. You know it helps other businesses that on that road, right. Thats quite an expense. Companies dont always think about publicizing that, so when you come in with public relations to do crisis management, not only are you mitigating the damage, and maybe finding out what was neglected and maybe handling that, but you are also publicizing getting out in the community everything that that company has been doing thats been great. It is a whole another ball of wax. It has a very precision technology that you use. An online reputation. If you are already doing that, any blip that you have; any negative article that you have; any bad publicity that you have, it is pretty much a no brainer to try and handle that. Once you already have so much good publicity, number 1) it makes the media a little more hesitate to print something bad. They kind of dot their is and cross their ts and make sure that their source is completely correct, because you have this ground swell of public opinion that are ready to support you. If you dont have that, you are much more open for attack, right? So, that is what we do in crisis management. If someone doesnt have that, which is common sometimes, not only do we handle the attack, right, by doing whatever we have to do. Maybe we have to change some policy; maybe we have to change a procedure; maybe we have to find out what was neglected and fix it, and say, Okay, my bad, youre right, blah, blah, blah, this is what we are doing. But while we are doing that, we do this complete onslaught of good works publicity that just goes on and on and on and on that dwarfs any negativity that you could ever get.
