Just as John is running up to check on Sherlock, if you watch very carefully you can see that the truck carrying bags and also blocking John's view of Sherlock is actually starting to move, and in the later shots it's gone.
Sherlock is also adament that John stand in a very specific spot and stay there before the jump, so that he can control what John does and doesn't see.
So we don't see Sherlock killing himself, we just see what John is witnessing from his point of view.

These two had best be nominated for BAFTAs again based on this scene alone.
God, I know it's creepy but sherlock's face when they roll him over, all pale and silver eyed with perfect drips of blood and his black hair, is a GOD DAMN WORK OF ART.

Sherlock wouldn't die of course - it's the Reaichenbach Fall where Doyle tried to kill him, but he later was forced to bring Sherlock back to life by all his fans. That's the mistake, beacuse before that, sherlock's death had meaning, it was beautiful and very human. But after that it looked like Sherlock made John suffer through this hell just because it was easier for himself to disappear for a while. Doyle stole Sherlock's humanity, and for that I hate him. But I must also love him.
