solder flux, isnt flux used to clean the solder? or is it a multipurpose?

The 'N' in QFN stands for 'no-leads' (the pads are underneath directly soldered to the PCB). Indeed it does look like you have a QNP and the horizontal drag technique would prove significantly faster.

That appears to be a QFP. This is a very slow method regardless.
