It was during an expedition in 2009 in the Southwest Pacific, funded by the National Science Foundation and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and led by University of Washington oceanographer Joseph Resing, when scientists first witnessed the fiery eruption and molten lava from a deep sea volcano. Here bubbles of magma form and implode from the vent scientists named Hades. Scientists have reported their latest findings from the expedition in Nature Geoscience online, October 2011.
