no need to even get a book if you know the notes in a major scale.....the modes are the postions of the scale....plus this video does a pretty good job of explaining what modes are

its easy. look.. example for parent of C major:
cdefgabc - ionian (major)
defgabcd - dorian
efgabcde - phryigian (not "frigin")
fgabcdef - lydian
gabcdefg - mixiydian
abcdefga - aeolian (minor)
bcdefgab - locrian
