Israeli Billionaire to Live in Orphanage

While many people strive for luxury, one Jewish billionaire from Israel caused a stir when he announced he would be moving into an orphanage. Here's more from our Israeli correspondent.

The Sami Shamoon Academic College of Engineering in the city of Beer Sheva is the biggest college of engineering in Israel. It is just one of many schools and Jewish institutions donated by billionaire Sami Shamoon. Mr. Shamoon explains his philosophy.

[Sami Shamoon, Israeli Billionaire]:
"I believe in education. If you educate a person, this is very important. I think life is very simple, if you don't look only after yourself."

Mr. Shamoon's next project will be to renovate an orphanage in the city of Nethania--a ten million dollar project. For him, this will be the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

[Sami Shamoon, Israeli Billionaire]:
"I was maybe 12 years old in Baghdad, when it was in the summer, we slept on the roof, dry weather but hot. I looked at the stars, it was so clear skies, and you'd think you could touch the stars. I thought. This is our roof, the sky. When I grow up, if I will be a bit rich, wealthy -- I will open Beit Yetomim (orphanage), to give them a roof."

But Mr. Shamoon feels that besides building the orphanage he also wants to move in and make it his new home.

[Sami Shamoon, Israeli Billionaire]:
"I asked my wife and she agreed. They went to ask my wife. She said: "Yes, why not?" And we decided to make a four bedroom apartment there."

The orphanage will include facilities like a library, a fitness room, computer classes, a health center, and a conference hall--all equipped with the latest technological innovations.

questions? orphanage is open to children of all races in the region? is there essentially a 100 percent ethnic population inside? Is it open to those who were native to the region (actually living there and not citing ancient propaganda to lay a legal claim on land already occupied)....Israel has more money pouring into it than any other country I can think of, but I can't think of a good reason why money/resources should be.
