I say there was going to be a rayman 2 2D version but was cancelled, so when Rayman 3 came out so they changed the story to be similar to Rayman 3 while keeping the gameplay of the 2nd one.

yes and no. the game is called rayman 3 but it has more resembles with rayman 2
