The Burundi Red Cross has benefited from a pilot project of the International Federation's "Mobilizing the local capacity of Africa" programme. This global programme represents a major effort to strengthen the local structures, capacity and services of African National Societies by strengthening the ties within their communities. Each unit mobilizes its own resources in order to serve the most vulnerable in their village. In Burundi, the hope is to have active local units run by volunteers in each of the 2,725 collines (villages) in the country by 2010. The knowledge gained through this pilot will be shared with all interested National Societies.
