id buy the little keyboards and shit even if they are broken, most of the time ive been able to fix them and if not you can bring them back and exchange them. ive been finding cool stuff at value village and the goodwill in ballard as well. last 2 times i went to value village i found a speak and spell both times for a dollar each and they even had cartridges in them!

see that thing you shifted stuff out the way to get to? the vtech thing with the alphabet on it? i have one of them. it is a bit crap as a bend, though i havent really probed it much.
