  • Indeed, he was a great supporter of Britain's best PM clement Attlee who nationalized industry and introduced universal health care.

  • Orwell was a democratic socialist and he believed German " fascism" was another form of capitalism who adopted socialist policies to make their economy more efficient in war time.

  • The idea that 1984 played any role in the collapse of USSR, ridiculous. John is making a futile mistake of comparing Marxism with fascism and National Socialism by using the anti-sociological idea of "totalitarianism" to give them a common ground. This is superficial, at best. He also seems to view imperialism as a world savior. Burgess shows how 1984 was basically London 1948 in his book 1985.

    Regards,

    M. Rodden

  • To me, 1984 and Animal Farm represented timeless paradigms of declining human society. Every society in history which has declined, went the same route as Orwell described, whether you look at ancient Rome, or modern China.

Those two books changed my life when I was 18. I'm caused to remember those ideas almost every day.
