Using terms like McDojo about any martial art speaks volumes about a person, sounds like someone that read a magazine and became a McExpert.I feel sorry for negative minded people,it must be hard to go through life like that.
SooBahk Do is a McDojo. Hwang Kee read a few books on Shotokan Karate then gave himself a blackbelt. Look at any decent book on Karate and Kee is not even mentioned. Outside the "cult of the striking hand" Kee is a joke. During the occupation of Korean, this "legendary" martial artist actually worked for the occupying Japanese forces on the Manchurian railroad. No wonder he was rejected from the unification of the Kwans.
How dare you try to call Soo Bahk Do a McDojo, when the only information you have on it is from a six-minute video. You're ignorant comments only make you seem like a hater and a bigot. By the way, saying that martial arts is not a physically strenuous activity only shows that you've never been to a real martial arts class, and certainly not a dojang. No reason to badmouth another's martial art just because you got your rear kicked by a six-year-old black belt when you were in college.
thats because its cloudy and the vid wont play. you can hardly judge an art based on a 6 min video. if you don't do it their way or agree with them doing it that way, that doesnt mean its no good.
boxing, muay thai, wrestling, all sports. agreed fights, rules, and weight classes.
i agree people should at least cross train in those things. but tma dont really punch with their fist on their hip you know, nor do they really think an ax kick or spinning hook is the first line of defense.
Personally I don't believe in any form of self defense that doesn't emphasize regular practicing of practical techniques like boxing punches, knees from the clinch, and staying on your feet so arts like boxing, muay thai, wrestling/bjj. The other and best form of self defense on the street is being taught how to avoid the situation, get away and get help asap. Also I noticed you didn't bother to point out 3 useful things in this video :P
2 on one=2 people attacking 1. ie...self defense scenario. not a fight..a fight is something that's agreed to (to me anyway), you put up your dukes, i put up mine, we're gonna see what the other one has...that's a fight.
most people who don't do kata simply don't understand the point of it. it isnt literal. its a tool, a way to practice basic techniques, form, posture, movement.
but just out of curiosity..what do you think people SHOULD be training in? mma, bjj, krav maga...
Who says a fight has to be one on one, it's not a fight if it's 2 on 1? Of course fighting plays a role in self defense, I didn't see them practicing any conflict mediation here, only physical defense (fighting). I challenge you to point out even three useful things in that video for self defense. The blocks and strikes were all completely unrealistic. Dojos like these are made to make money by making people feel like they are learning something valuable without any excessive physical work.
