Emoupolis, Syros in the Greek Isles - Cyclades

Ermoupoli, 'Queen of the Cyclades', is the capital and main harbor of Syros. Ermoupoli stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions and white houses in the island style cascading down to the harbor. The center of the town, where Miaouli Square stands ringed with cafes, has a grandeur al of its own. Among the most important buildings are the Town Hall (to plans by Ziller) and the Apollo Municipal Theatre, which is a copy in miniature of La Scala, Milan. There is also a statue of Admiral Miaoulis.

Ermoupoli has numerous magnificent churches, the most interesting of which are those dedicated to the Transfiguration, the Dormition of Our Lady, St Demetrius, the Three Hierarchs, and St Nicholas.

Me and my wife first set foot on Syros 3 years ago and fell in love with the island. On september 17th this year we will be returning for a weeks stay in Ermoupolis. We loved having breakfast in the square, before catching the bus to Kini for a day at the beach. There is also a bar that we loved. It reminded us of a Moroccan style bar and we cannot wait to have a nice chilling few beers in there again. I just hope the weather is still good in september.
