"This 1998 piece was a preliminary concept originally intended to be part of my unreleased film How We Chill: The Incomplete Chicago Hip Hop Documentary.

I originally put this together when I was 18, from interviews I had shot over the two previous years ('96-'97).
This is actually the first thing I ever legitimately edited (excluding VCR to VCR) and one of my favorite segments I've ever compiled for both sentimental and aesthetic reasons.

It's simply, "Hip Hop", as defined by legends and prominent figures of the Chicago Hip Hop scene."

  • It was so great seeing all these folks I haven't see in FOREVER, spittin the truth about what hip-hop is, is not, and the fact that it truly can't be defined. When I see stuff like that, it makes me remember how REAL we are in Chicago! There's no set like ours, Chi-Rock 4 EVA!! Funky Dope CMORE1!! Watch out for the research project, y'all!

  • if you ask me...hip hop is self-empowerment, it's a movement, hip hop was born to ignite a fire in the soul of African Americans originally...hip hop has become a way of life and in my opinion i believe that what it turned to nowadays has caused problems or rather made problems worse in the African American community because of what they preach...our young kids are listening to every word and they take it literally and wanna live just like that...it's affecting the next generation in a big way

  • Great video.
