Trying out my new mandolin, the Loar LM-520, with a little rendition of a bluegrass standard, Sally Goodin (at tempo di learno, as they say in music school).

As you can tell from the rest of my videos (and probably my mandolin playing), I'm a guitarist that's venturing into the world of mandolins and bluegrass. I'm loving it so far, although I think my cat has a few objections.

My take on the Loar LM-520: Excellent instrument for the price range. The tone is bright but full, and it responds to dynamics really well. The craftsmanship is what you'd expect from a Chinese made instrument for this price, but it's all cosmetic and has no affect on the playability or sound.

  • Why do I see the 500 costing more than the 520 online? I like the popping strings on this one you play...seems 520 is a good sound for the prices they want?

  • @soilfit I'm very happy with the 520 for the price. I'm sure more expensive instruments sound better, but I think this one sounds awfully good.

  • Love to hear more songs on your Loar 520! Sounds pretty decent to me. I have a Loar LM-400 that I love.

  • @Fstpicker Thanks, I'll post more soon. I've been playing it a lot and am getting a better tone out of it. It's a great little mando!

  • i was expecting Chango studio's Cameron Mizell lol

  • @bluegrasssingingman I have the 500 now (ordered it) the action seems higher than I would like but the sound is great.

  • I have The Loar LM 600 V. What a great Mandolin. Ever bit as good as Gibson, Weber, and Collings. I know they don't like to here that, but it is true. The Loar LM 600 V has a deep sound, with alot of pop. Very nice low action.

  • im geting my first mando i was looking at this one.is it nice does it need a big set up?

  • Nice work man! Sounds great.

  • I've been considering this mandolin for a while and am so happy to see/hear it played so well. Thanks for sharing the new instrument and great picking!
