@djbubs not a question of being open or close minded. I've been following and collecting his music since 1986 and this is not his best work at all, but yes he deserves a lot of credit especially for launching a lot of artirts' and producer's careers and for creating a revolution in the US R&B, hip hop sound scape over the years .
