Computer Science at the University of Bristol

A 48 hour film project we did as part of our Communication Studies unit, though we did ours in nearer to 24 hours to work around interviewees. I worked with three other people, Michael Herold, Guy Flavell and Henok Bekele.

The initial brief said we either had to do a film on the phrase "There you are." or do a film about computer science. None of us could come up with a good idea for a film on the phrase so we went with the computer science film. The intent was to make a film which showed what the Computer Science course was like here at Bristol, so A level students would have a better idea of what it was like before they started the course.

There is a lot I'd change, especially now that we know how to use the equipment, but for a rushed first film like that, can't really complain.

I'd appreciate constructive criticism though there are a few points that I already know and don't need to be reminded of.

* Audio - I wish we could empty the building of people to record, but can't and can't even turn off the ventilation systems so all the audio is pretty poor.

* Location - similar with audio, I wish we had had lighting equipment to get a good shot, but we didn't and with our cameraman's inexperience ...

* Content - we only had 62 minutes of film to shoot with so we're actually quite lucky to have gotten the content we did. I know from previous experience you can shoot for hours and only end up with a few minutes of good footage. About 80 percent of the work went into editing rather than the shooting, and that's one of the main reasons it's ended up as it has. Good or bad, I don't know. Also, none of the lecturers or students had confirmed the interview beforehand so we started the day not knowing if we were going to get any footage at all.
