Took a trip down to central Texas to a new spot to pick up some flint. Was able to pick up some but not near what I would have liked to. Did find a nice little flint knife as a reward for a day of looking.

  • oh god... so jealous. I live in Arizona and there's actually a ton of flint/chert/chalcedony. Problem is it's ALL no bigger than about a tennis ball... I find myself working with quartzite; what a pain that is. When I compared my points with pictures of local indian points.. they looked almost identical. I was sure I would be disappointed, but I mean seriously it makes sense that the end results are the same considering the material available.

  • @Cbertian - Quartzite is about all that's local where I live. The Native Americans made points out of it but sometimes it is really hard to call them a point as they look very, very crude. I've heard that heat-treating quartize will make it a bit easier to work but haven't tried it yet.

  • Cool! looked like a lot of fun. Great find too! Between you and me... you make LOT better points than the one you found... heh, heh :P

  • @gotrocksinhead - Thanks... It was interesting that while looking at the crude knife/tool, I was thinking "if I hit it here I could remove a large flake and thin it out and if I hit it here..." Then it occured to me that the Indian that made it years ago wasn't trying for "pretty", just a sharp edge where he could use it. Totally different mindset; not saying of course that I'm any smarter :)

  • Looks like you got yourself 80 to 100 lbs if not more. Very nice!

  • @LamokaGhost - I had to take a small piece this afternoon, about 3 1/2" in diameter and cut a couple slices off with the rock saw to look at the flint. It is rather translucent with a butterscotch color when held up to the light. Would have liked to find six or seven buckets full but I think what I did find will make some nice points.

  • @ShinBone5000 lol... very crude indeed. I have some wierd stuff that almost looks like it goes from chert to quartzite (biggish crystal structure to very smooth... within the same rock). Like half of it is one thing and the other is another. Some weird and interesting stuff. Since I started knapping I've learned a ton about geology in general, but as far as really understanding what's going on... I guess that'll just take time and more learning. I dig your points btw, very awesome!

  • @ShinBone5000 With how many "crude" points there are, definitely different mindset!

  • Thank you for all the help, if you could in the near future make a video on how YOU heat flint to make it more glass like that would be great. Thank you again for all your help sir.

  • @ShinBone5000 we go look at it next week and ill shot you something then
