The Sustainable Building Techniques stand @ Grand Designs Live 2011 at the Birmingham NEC was organised by LILI, the Low Impact Living Initiative. In contrast to the rest of the show the LILI stand members and partners were there to give impartial help and advice on a broad range of issues relating to reduced impact. So there was straw bale construction, cobb, insulation, solar thermal, solar PV, low energy materials, green paints, and much more. I was there advising on integrating heating and hot water systems using accumulator tanks / heat stores, as well as woodburning stoves and chimney design and the more general aspects of reducing heat loads by insulating and passive solar gains.
@gibs9105343 there did seem to be quite a few stalls selling cookware and the like and then others concentrating on pretty standard building techniques, then I am not a natural shopper myself so perhaps I am biased. On the positive side I chatted with quite a few people clutching their plans and pretty switched on when it came to low embodied energy design and designing houses with low energy consumption - the LILI stand seemed a real attraction especially for people with this type of focus.
