It is inspiring to see children empowered- those students must have a fantastic teacher who knows that social justice issues make for a rich curriculum. Hmmmm...how would standardized testing from the government assess the learning that is so obviously taking place here? We need to support this type of educational experience, not focus on traditional methods of learning and testing.
You should have watched the video before commenting. However, you are right about the use of various brokers. Here in Canada, we are seeing the closure of several chocolate factories and also paper mills that strip the land and pollute the air and water.
There is change all around us, we just have to look up from the TV once on a while to see it.
Yes, the chocolate supply chain is complex. However, so many (and smaller) companies CAN track the supply chain to ensure that their cocoa products are slave-free. So WHY can't the big companies do it?
Oh and incidentally, Cadbury already tracks one of its chocolates to make sure its slave-free but they don't seem to want to extend this practice to the rest of their chocolates.
I only watched the first three minutes, but it looks like the result of obvious fishing for stories. Blaming Nestle, Mars, and Cadburry is way off. Raw ingredients are often sold to these companies that have been moved through a number of different brokers.
thanks for posting this.
this project we done got more publicity and support than we ever expected.
it's been a few years since then, and not too many changes have yet been made.
i hope we can get this campaign up and running again at full force, as we are all older, brighter and are armed with more questions this time round.

I think though if these companies put pressures on their suppliers to be fairly traded chocolate this sort of story would not appear
