India's greatest singer lays down his tanpura.

Any such claim will be debated and contested, of course, but not many would dispute that he was the most influential classical musician of the era.

Panditji was influential because at least two generations of musicians wanted to be like him, and many innocently mimicked his style. He had grace and charisma in person and on stage.

शहनाईची गुंज अचानक,

अश्रूंमध्ये भिजून गेली,

भारत-भूचे रत्न हरवले,

पुण्यनगरी कुंठीत झाली...'

पंडित भीमसेन जोशी हे भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीताचे कोहिनूरच होते. शास्त्रीय संगीत एका विशिष्ट वर्गापुरतेच मर्यादीत होते. मात्र पंडितजींनी या मर्यादा ओलांडून संगीताला सामान्य माणसाच्या जवळ नेले. जाणकार तसेच सर्वसामान्य दोघांनीही त्यांच्या संगीताला भरभरून दाद दिली, हेच त्यांचे सर्वात मोठे योगदान होते.

भीमसेनजींच्या गाण्याचं एक मोठं वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे त्यांचा झपाटलेपणा. गाणं कुठेही आणि कधीही असो, ते अगदी झपाटल्यासारखं गायचे. मुख्य म्हणजे हे झपाटलेपण मैफलीच्या शेवटापर्यंत कायम असायचं. त्यामुळे एकदा त्यांच्या मैफलीला बसलेला रसिक शेवटपर्यंत तिथेच खिळून राहायचा. तो भीमसेनजींच्या झपाटलेपणातून सुटूच शकायचा नाही.

भीमसेनजींसारखाच 'भीमसेनी' लोकप्रियता मिळवणारा शास्त्रीय-संगीत गायक एखादाच.

What a beautiful video! Love the droplets of water on the gorgeous clover leaf @ 0:25 & the delicate white flower right after that! I love the colors green of trees, & white of clouds that signifies "purity"! So beautiful!

You've complimented Joshi Ji's powerful classical Voice with such befitting images of nature, flowers, water, clouds, rain, rainbows, throughout representing the beauty & command in "his" Voice!

I could almost imagine taking a walk in the rain I LOVE @4:44!

Bhimsenji was/is one of a kind - a classic recording, though I do miss Vasant Acharekar's tabla accompaniment in this and other later renditions. Very cool visual effects!
