Matt Clarke takes a first look at the new U series of underwater filters from Hagen.

Hagen's recently launched U-series of internal power filters - U1, U2, U3 and U4 - have literally just hit the shelves in the UK, and we've just received our first ones in for review.

To find out how we rate these, and to see how they perform in the aquarium against some of the other internal filters on the market, check out the results of our in-depth product test in the January 2009 issue of Practical Fishkeeping magazine.

  • I just ordered this one for my 55litre tank, i get it tmr, looking forward to seeing how good it is,

I have a Fluval 4 Plus in my bigger tank and I've had it for 5 years, it's starting tom play up now, but i can't complain really as it's done an amazing job.

If my U2 filter is good for my smaller tank, i may buy the big one (U4) for my lounge one. :)

  • will they send it to sweden

  • i I just got my New Fluval u4 Filter and when i opened my fluval there was 3 compartments the middle one or the bio compartment there was a open hook by accident i cliped it off i was wondering if i can buy another case.

  • @integrags1

very quiet without the venturi, with about the same as a tetra whisper

  • @aaronhare thats a dumb idea. .just use a fluval fx5. .or maybe even 2 lol

  • I have a u2 in a 90litre tank in my bedroom and its basically silent :-)

  • I am just wondering I have a 150 gallon tank

with external filter all set up

What would be wrong with installing 5 of these internal filters???

made for 63 gallons a piece since external filters are a lot more work??

  • What is the noise level for this filter? Would this be a good filter for an aquarium in a beedroom?

  • @wcrimi3

It would appear so! The features seem to be better; more filteration, more filteration processes and compartments and better control over flow. I love the idea of having flow at the bottom and top of the tank!

Heya! A venturi system is a wee attachment on a filter at the outflow to allow more oxygenation into a tank. I have the older Fluval+ series and the venturi is at the top of the filter. I have a small section of hose pipe going to venturi and it massively increases the bubbles in the water negating the need to have a separate pump for an air wand.

It makes a sucking noise which might bug you so stick a 1 way valve on it to stop the sucking noise.
