This conference showcased how hip hop scholars, activists, artists and educators use hip hop to educate, empower, transform, and radicalize communities. Presenters demonstrated how hip hop pedagogy can be used to raise awareness about how race, gender, sexuality, migration, and poverty impact the lives and communities of young people, locally and globally. Presenters and attendees discussed and demonstrated ways to creatively apply the elements of hip hop (spoken word, break-dancing, graffiti, and dee-jaying, etc.) to engage diverse groups of young people with innovative community engagement projects. Our ultimate objective is to activate preexisting networks of hip hop practitioners to expand the use of hip hop as a tool to foment productive alliances between academic institutions and community organizations. Our conference was be divided into 3 themed days. Those themes include "I Used to Love H.E.R. - Bringing Back the Love" focusing on Feminism & Women in Hip Hop, "Remixing Borders, Transgressing Generational & Cultural Boundaries," focusing on using hip hop as a tool to create unity among all groups, and "Us," focusing on using hip hop as a means to heal and transform individuals and community.
