Wigstock is an Israeli national drag festival that is dedicated to raising awareness and diminishing HIV-related stigma. The festival was first brought to Israel by Bella, a group of LGBT activists who today are part of the Israeli Aids Task Force.

History: Wigstock first appeared in the eye of the Israeli public in
1998 as a symbol of the fight against homophobia. In the same year armed forces tried to disperse the festival as it was seen as a public desecration of Sabbath. The policemen, who used excessive force, wore rubber gloves because of their unfounded fear and ignorance about HIV.
After the confrontation, it was agreed that a small group of protesters will march to Rabin Square (the largest open public city square in Tel Aviv), where for the first time in Israeli history, a giant gay pride flag was raised in front of the city hall.

Many activists compared the 98' Israeli Wigstock riots to Stonewall. A couple of weeks later, the Israeli gay community had their first gay pride parade in Tel-Aviv, supported by municipal authorities. This symbolized the beginning of a new era which defined Tel-Aviv as the thriving gay capital of the Middle East.
