Gerstman Family Honored as Hometown Heroes - Family Recognized for Community Service
Garden City, NY; March 13, 2008 -- The Gerstman family, founders of the Garden City, NY-based nonprofit organization, the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation, was selected as the March 2008 Hometown Heroes, an honor bestowed by Cherry Hill, NJ-based Commerce Bank and the New York Islanders hockey club. The award was presented on Thursday night, March 6, 2008, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, in front of a sell out crowd on hand to watch the Islanders host the New York Rangers.
The Gerstmans received the award as recognition for their outstanding work in helping the physically disabled children in the community through their Foundation, which helps fund summer camp for physically disabled children in the New York Metropolitan area and Northeast United States. For the past five summers, the Foundation has been partnering with existing accredited camping institutions to help make the dream of summer camp a reality for those physically disabled children who cannot afford the added cost of specialized busing, one-on-one care, and counseling.
The award, presented by Eric Fishon, Commerce Bank's Assistant Vice President of Suburban New York Marketing, recognizes those individuals or groups who have gone above and beyond to help others in the community.
Dan Gerstman, one of the co-founders of the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation, represented the Gerstman family at the awards ceremony.
"The Gerstman Family is thankful for the recognition of the Lisa Beth Gerstman Foundation," he said. "The recognition allows us to promote awareness for our mission, which is to send a record number of children with physical disabilities to integrated summer camps. Being named Hometown Heroes confirms that we are working in an important area where children and their families get tremendous benefits from the service that we provide right here in New York!"
Mike Matranga, New York Islanders Partnership Marketing Coordinator, said that the award is a great way to honor those members of our community who go the extra step. "As the only Long Island major professional sports team, we feel privileged to recognize the people in our community who do so much to help others," he said. "Through the Hometown Heroes program, we have really heard some wonderful stories, and we have gotten tremendous feedback from the fans."
