Bernard Carabello pioneered the deinstitutionalization movement in the 1970s with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Geraldo Rivera. As a former resident of New York State's Willowbrook Institution -- the largest institution for people with developmental disabilities and mental retardation at that time -- Bernard snuck Geraldo into the back gates to create the expose that would later cause Willowbrook's closure, along with a massive wave of institution closures throughout the nation.
