You both have good points, but I have to agree more with earylime. Without these platforms social media would not exist and if they went away people would be very upset. It definitely pertains to the present and currently Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are social media...

@MrJonPederson Social Media IS those things - and more! If Facebook went away tomorrow, millions of people would be angry, and would probably Tweet about it. Social media does evolve, but it's also all about what people are doing in the present, which is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

I disagree... Social Media is not Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr... those are only tools for social media. They could go away tomorrow, and social media would continue via new channels and tools.
